Stephen Hitchell (aka Phase90, Radius, Soultek, Variant o Echospace junto a su colega Robert Deepchord) se pone el traje de Intrusion nuevamente para soltar este trabajo que bebe techno de detroit y suda dub análogico Berlinés. Espacio, graves y mucho groove podrían ser tres adjetivos de la cosa, pero ninguna descripción le haría justicia, solo la escucha puede traducir las sensaciones y si es en con unos buenos auriculares aislantes mucho mejor. Paul St. Hilaire (o la voz de tanto dub electrónico como Tikiman o junto a Ryhthm and Sound, Deadbeat y van) hace voces en un par de temazos. Mucho más se puede decir pero de nuevo van a sobrar palabras.

Stephen Hitchell (aka Phase90, Radius, Soultek, Stephen Hitchell, Variant or Deepchord with his colleague Robert from Echoespace) deliver this massive album wich is pure ambient deep techno dub. Words come easy to describe this work but they won´t be enough to undestand it, just dive in with a pair of closed headphones and dive deep, folllow the stream paying attention to the voice of Paul St. Hilaire (yes the one behind so many dub-infused-techno-infused-dub) and let yourself go with it...

Trus´me hace un viaje al deep house a la americana (a la Moodyman, Parrish, etc), al disco y a las raíces negras de la música moderna de baile. En conjunto es un gran trabajo, suena un tanto cercano a sus influencias por momentos pero suficientemente personal para no ser una mera copia. Aunque el sample que abreel track que da nombre al disco ya lo había utilizado Theo Parrish en Shifting hands, en fin...

Trus´me shows his influences coming from black dance music, too close to the tributed artist that influenced this work but still make it to sound original. Recomended

Esto es pura pulpa, jamón del medio, dos tracks dos de lo mejorcito que dió Ostgut ton. Uno de los sellos que se las traen últimamente. Si Berghain suena así quiero estar ahí algun día, o noche mejor dicho para comprobarlo. Un track de Lionni de feeling deep house y sonido clásico techno de la vieja escuela. Y por supuesto Radioslave que vuelve a lucirse con techno a la basic channel: minimalista, contundente y lleno de echos y delays.

Move D - 14 Tracks - Boomkat

La tienda de discos Boomkat (ubicada en Manchester hasta donde sé) es a mi entender una de las mejores y mas fiables a la hora de comprar música electrónica. No solo por la selección de techno, house, dubstep y todas sus variantes, sino también por la cantidad de música de corte experimental, independiente y dificil de hallar en otros lados (ellos dicen esto al respecto "Our product extends to cover the most underground forms of Electronic music, Hip Hop, Post-Folk, Alt.Country, IDM, Electro, Acoustica, Post-Rock, Ambient, Micro House, Detroit Techno, Mentalism, Electropop, Indiepop, Grime, Free Jazz, Modern Composition, Cologne Techno, Future Disco, Drone, Sublow, Soundtracks, Noise and out and out post-generic objects of wonder"). Además de atender un mostrador tienen una bien montada tienda virtual donde muy bien puede uno conocer que se cuece en el mundo de la música de bajos, el techno underground y las habitaciones/estudio de tantos productores de música que pasan desapercbidos a las lupas de las multinacionales discográficas. En fin esto iría para largo y el punto es que desde Boomkat lanzaron este proyecto de unir 14 tracks con un concepto y venderlos. Una iniciativa original y una manera de entrar en contacto con novedades para luego, cada uno, seguir buceando. Lo 14 tracks que cuelgan aquí debajo se los debemos a un gran productor de deep house, minimal, techno a lo detroit y electrónicas varias. Se llama David Moufang pero es mucho mas conocido como Move D. Con tanta y tan variada producción tiene diferentes nombres con los cuales produce solo o junto a otros músicos. Para los que lo conocían a él, pero no los 14 tracks y Boomkat o viceversa.

This is a 14 tracks selection of David Moufang´s music. Sometimes alone as Move D, sometimes with other musicians like Benjamin Brunn but always keeping that deepness and his characteristic sound. This compilation has been put together by the people of one of the most reliable record stores: Boomkat, wich is in Manchester but online for the rest of the world. They offer a fine and broad selection of music that goes from free jazz or tape experiment to detroit techno or dubstep, and the whole spectrum in between. Also they have this very special and well curated descrption of each record or mp3 they sale. Talking about dubstep, here we go with a special work on that subject. Breakpoint or melting pot? Martyn comes from D&B, and he manages to put together this album that stare between techno and dubstep, using old school sounds and new school rhythms sounding fresh and exiting.

Dubstep es un género de música electrónica que pertenece a la familia de estilos del drum and bass y tuvo sus orígenes en la escena del UK Garage a fines de los años 90. Se puede describir como una aproximación electrónica al dub tradicional y comparte con este estilo estructuras rítmicas y la velocidad.
Si bien en los primeros años fue más una aproximación experimental de algunos productores hacia el garaje británico que un género, alrededor de 2005 se conformó una escena con muchos adeptos alrededor del dubstep, primero en Londres, pasando después al resto de Inglaterra y al resto del mundo.

Estilo
El dubstep mezcla los ritmos sincopados del tradicional UK Garage con elementos del jungle y UK Hardcore de principios de los 90 y por lo tanto tiene un sonido más experimental y agresivo que sus antecesores. Se diferencia del Grime por la ausencia de raps, aunque la aproximación musical de los dos estilos es similar.
Se caracteriza por su carácter oscuro, consecuencia de la utilización de escalas tonales del modo menor y disonancias, un protagonismo de la bassline (línea de graves) y ritmos minimalistas y sutiles. Muchas veces es utilizado la técnica half-step, la cual enfatiza el primer y el tercer tiempo de cada compás, simulando la reducción de la velocidad a la mitad. La utilización de tripletes es otra característica típica del dubstep.
Varios elementos fueron incorporados desde otros géneros del breakbeat, así el llamado bass drop, cuyo origen se remonta al drum'n'bass y que consiste de una línea de graves que baja de un tono a otro usando portamento. Otra característica es el rewind, incorporado desde el dub y el jungle, que consiste en la repetición de una secuencia popular por parte del DJ usando un vinilo.

Origen y desarrollo
El sonido del dubstep fue creado alrededor del año 1999 por productores experimentales de la escena garaje británica, entre las que se destaca El-B, que a veces es llamado el "padre del dubstep". No fue más que una aproximación experimental al Garaje hasta el año 2001 en el cual fue fundado la serie de eventos Forward>> en el barrio londinense de Soho. Además, el grupo de músicos detrás de esta serie produjo un programa de radio en la estación pirata de Pinsa FM, que se convirtió en el primero en difundir la música.
A partir del año 2003 la escena logró captar la atención de un público más variado. DJs y productores como DJ Hatcha y Digital Mystikz ampliaron el espectro musical del género incorporando influencias del reggae y hasta de música orquestal. En el 2005, por primera vez un medio con reputación, el Independent on Sunday informó en una nota sobre la nueva tendencia.
En el año 2006, el interés en el género creció también fuera de Inglaterra. Un buen ejemplo es la banda de sonido de la película de ciencia ficción Children of Men que incorporó varios temas de dubstep y así ayudó a difundir el estilo. Además, con The Roots of Dubstep 2000-2004 apareció el primer compilado retrospectivo. En 2007 el género comenzó a influirse mutuamente con el techno, destacándose el productor y DJ chileno Ricardo Villalobos que no solo remixeó tracks de dubstep, sino también incorpora el estilo en sus sets.

The Wire 300: Simon Reynolds On The Hardcore Continuum #7: Grime (And A Little Dubstep) (2005)

Grime emerged from London's pirate radio underground. Its immediate precursor was two-step (aka UK Garage), which at the turn of the millennium broke into the UK pop mainstream in a massive way. Two-step had been shaped by the "feminine pressure" for sing along melodies and wind-your-waist grooviness. Grime arose as a backlash against this crossover sound, a violent swing in the scene's inner gender-pendulum from yin to yang. Out went two-step's high pitched diva vocals, sensual swing, and sexed up amorousness; in came gruff rapping, stiff electro-influenced beats, and raucous aggression.MCs have been part of the pirate radio tradition for at least fifteen years, going back through Garage and Jungle to the early days of Hardcore. By the end of the 90s, however, the MCs were moving beyond their customary restricted role as party 'hosts' and sidekicks to the DJ. Instead of gimmicky vocal licks and 'praise the selector' exhortations, they began to rap actual verses: initially, extended takes on traditional boasts about their own mic skills, but soon getting into narrative, complicated metaphors and rhyme schemes, vicious dissing of rivals, and even introspective soliloquies. The MC's rise swiftly eclipsed the DJ, hitherto the most prominent figure on rave flyers or the main designated artist on record releases. 2001 was the turning point, when MCs shunted selectors out of the spotlight. So Solid Crew broke into the pop charts, and the underground seethed with similar collectives modeled on the clan/dynasty structures that prevail in American hiphop and Jamaican dancehall.Emerging from the transitional sound known as 'Garage rap', Grime really defined itself as a distinct genre when the first tracks appeared that were designed purely as 'MC tools' - riddims for rappers to ride. These Grimestrumentals were largely sourced in the electro diaspora - post-"Sleng Teng" ragga, Miami bass, New Orleans bounce, Dirty South crunk, and 'street rap' producers like Swizz Beats. Like these genres, Grime doesn't go in much for sampling but prefers synths, typically with cheap 'n' nasty timbres that vaguely evoke the Eighties and often seem to be influenced by pulp movie video soundtracks, videogame musik, and even mobile phone ringtones. But in Grime's textured beats and complex programming you can also hear the imprint of the Jungle that most of these late teens/early twenties producers grew up on, alongside folk memory traces of gabba and Techno. Sometimes, listening, you might imagine you can hear uncanny echoes of post-punk era electro-primitivists such as The Normal, DAF, Cabaret Voltaire, or the calligraphic exquisiteness of Japan, Thomas Leer, and The Residents.Inherited from the period when two-step ruled the top 10, but also inspired by enviously watching the living large of American rap superstars, Grime feels a powerful drive to invade the mainstream and get 'paid in full'. Pirate radio, a broadcast medium with a potentially vast audience, encourages this grandiosity. One peculiar byproduct of Grime's ambition is the scene's craze for DVD releases, like Risky Roadz and Lord Of The Mic, containing documentary material with live footage. It's as if the scene is DIY-ing the sort of TV coverage it feels it deserves but isn't getting. Yet while some of top MCs are being groomed for stardom by major label-owned boutique labels, the day to day reality of Grime is grafting to get by in a narrowcast culture. Selling 500 copies of a track is considered a good result. The way Grime operates - small run vinyl-only pressings and mix-tapes, often sold directly to specialist stores - has a surprising amount in common with the microcultures familiar in these pages, such as Noise, free folk, Improv, and extreme Metal. Like these genres, Grime is what Chris Cutler would call an "engaged" culture, with a high ratio of performers to consumers. These aspiring MCs, DJs and producers have a deeper understanding of what constitutes skill and innovation in their scene. Grime even has an Improv element with its freestyles and MC battles. There's a glorious ephemerality to the way MCs riff off the cuff lyrics during pirate sessions, although fans have always tape recorded the shows and some are now getting archived on the web.Unlike those globally dispersed microcultures, Grime is geographically concentrated. It's popular across London and has outposts in other multiracial UK cities, but its absolute heartland consists of a few square miles in that part of East London not served by the Tube. In truth, it's a parochial scene, obsessed with a sense of place, riven by internecine conflicts and territorial rivalries (the intense competitiveness being one reason Grime's so creative). Un nuevo trabajo conjunto de Apparat y Modeselektor (el primero ya lleva unos cuantos años editado). Por momentos huele mas a Sascha Ring que a los Modeselektor, dios gracias. Es que Ring tiene un no se qué, esa IDM, esas atmósferas irrespirables por momentos, esos beats al límite, todo eso que hace que toque la fibra interior. El LP es algo desigual, con momentos flojos, pero con picos lo suficiente mente altos como para equilibrarlo. Huele a que estuvieron siguiendo bastante dubstep por ahí también? Snif, snif...

Moderat is Apparat + Modeselektor. This is their second collaboration and, eventhouhg it has ups and downs, the whole LP makes it at the end. Smells like Sascha Ring IDM most of the time, atmospheric, beatcracked and in some tracks smells like if they were listening to ¿dubstep? lately...snif, snif....

Debo reconocer que no soy muy amigo de los cd mix o de los compilados, pero la serie Fabric sí que lleva editados un puñado de buenos e interesantes trabajos en la materia. A través de uno de ellos conocí el track Bars 1,2,3,4 de März, me cansé de buscar el 12" en vano y resultó ser parte de este LP editado en este sello de digamos pop siglo XXI. Un trabajo del 2001 que suena actual hoy y siempre porque tiene los condimentos necesarios; experimentación electrónica, acordeón, algunas cuerdas y vientos. Este es un disco ideal para arrancar el otoño, y porque no, seguir escuchándolo en invierno. Es verdad que hoy con el tráfico de mp3 dificilmente tengamos más de una semana presente el mismo conjunto de tracks encarpetados antes conocidos como discos, pero este lo logrará, se los aseguro.

I was saying just above this paragraph, in the previous one, the spanish written one, quite a lot of things about how I got this superb album but in english I will make it simple, just because. It happens to be an exelent work full of electronics, some acordeon and the right amount of human voice, but the most important thing is that is good, and i mean it, just nice to listen to. Grab it, play it, enjoy it and no doubt buy it if you can get your hands over the LP.

La santísima trinidad: Juan Atkins, Derrick May y Kevin Saunderson. También encontrarán a Richie Hawtin por ahí, pero lo más importante es que esta serie de nueve capítulos es pura pulpa sin desperdicio acerca de la ciudad que dió luz a una movida de música de baile y experimentación que se esparció globalmente, se ramificó en mil y un subgeneros y subestilos, y hoy mueve a millones de personas en todo el mundo. Música electrónica en vena mes a mes1. Cuando decimos ‘minimal’, ya no decimos nada. Hace tiempo que esta palabra ingresó cadáver en el quirófano de la jerga musical, y ningún intento de reanimarla ha surtido efecto: su significado es más hueco que el de ‘música alternativa’ y como muletilla tiene más usos que ‘ochentas’ –parafraseo a Quevedo: “y tuvo más enredos que una araña; / más humos que seis mil hornos de leña”. O sea, sirve para todo, y por tanto no sirve para una mierda, he aquí su triste destino, anunciado a los cuatro vientos desde hace la tira. Esta reflexión no es nueva. Todos sabemos que la etiqueta minimal lleva años devaluada pese a haber sido usada con relativa propiedad en el arranque de su fama: en efecto, hubo un momento –años 2003 ó 2004, pongamos– en que el techno que subía con más fuerza e ingenio renunciaba a la velocidad, el recargamiento, insistía en la repetición sutil y, sobre todo, se nutría de minúsculos sonidos digitales. El problema en un principio quizá fuera no recurrir a la etimología de lo ‘micro’ –o sea, lo pequeño, lo subsónico– antes que a lo de lo ‘minimalista’ –repetitivo, pocos elementos–. Tanto da. En un principio sabíamos lo que queríamos decir, pero el verdadero minimalismo en el techno hace ya que yace sepultado entre toneladas de inanidad supuestamente house, supuestamente algo. Cada vez hay más paja envolviendo este grano, y uno ya se ha cansado de perder el tiempo escrutando y, lo que también es importante, intentando divulgar el verdadero significado de la cosa.Toda esta parrafada de arranque tiene mucho que ver con “The Grandfather Paradox. An Imprudent Journey Through 50 Years of Minimalistic Music” (BBE, 2009), el disco de sesión en el que la troupe Innervisions –Henrik Schwarz, Âme, Dixon– mete la cuchara en la escena del minimal con intenciones, por lo que se ve, didácticas y clarificadoras. Fue Kristian Beyer de Âme, hace ya un par de años, el que pronosticó, cual un Fernando Arrabal pedo, que el fin del minimalismo, como el del milenarismo, iba a llegar. Y sí, está llegando –será una agonía lenta, como la del General Franco entubado, pero tendrá fin–, y desde Innervisions se ha hecho bien en apostar por una vía diferente, enraizada en el deep house y el techno clásico, pero lo que está claro es que el vuelco no vendrá de sus oficinas. El cuándo, el cómo y el por qué de las ocasiones perdidas para crear un nuevo statu quo en la música de baile tendremos que analizarlos en otra ocasión –hoy no–, pero lo que sí se nos antoja es que este mix-CD del equipo teutón llega a destiempo y con, una vez más, las ideas cruzadas. Ellos lo presentan como un viaje por medio siglo de minimalismo en la música, pero ese camino, que comienza por donde debe –el tercer movimiento de “Electric Counterpoint” (Steve Reich), con esa guitarra de Pat Metheny que samplearon The Orb en “Little Fluffy Clouds”, el primer segmento de minimalismo americano que recontextualizó la generación rave británica–, se tuerce acto seguido por caminos caprichosos.Vaya por avante que el disco es absorvente y recomendable, de hecho es un lanzamiento importante para la música de baile en este comienzo de 2009: pocos discos de DJ habrá con tanta calidad en la selección y gusto en la mezcla como este “The Grandfather Paradox” –título tomado, por cierto, de una de las paradojas clásicas de la física que estudia la posibilidad del viaje en el tiempo, que en la cultura pop ha sido referida con total acierto en la saga “Regreso al futuro”–; el problema del disco es que, en lugar de ilustrar sobre minimalismo y su significado, sigue una de las máximas de Eugeni D’Ors: ‘oscurezcámoslo’. ¿Es realmente el french house de I:Cube minimalismo? ¿Lo es el soul detroitiano de Green Pickles con la voz de Marcellus Pittmann? ¿Y el intelligent techno de Metamatics? ¿Por qué no hay elementos de Manuel Göttsching, o de Philip Glass, o esos edits de Can que tan bien le salen a Pilooski? Por supuesto, el tema de la selección es personal y abierto –si hablamos de minimalismo entendido como música en la que entran en juego los mínimos elementos y la repetición ingeniosa de los mismos para crear un efecto de creatividad máxima, el material es inabarcable–, pero la intención didáctica del mix naufraga. Si pretendían esclarecerle a los jóvenes clubbers el significado de la palabra de la discordia, dudamos que lo logren. En cambio, ofrecen un disco fluvial, exquisito, sin relleno, aunque sea parcialmente minimalista. Quédese cada uno con lo que prefiera, con la ética –lo primero– o la estética –lo segundo–. En caso de optar por lo primero, rápidamente deberemos recomendarle la reedición de “Studio Eins” (Studio 1, 2009), el CD en el que Wolfgang Voigt recopiló algunos de sus tracks de esquemático, escueto e insistente techno made in Colonia planchados originalmente entre 1995 y 1997, una de las vértebras esenciales de la columna del techno reduccionista junto con los maxis de Robert Hood, Jeff Mills, Basic Channel, Daniel Bell y Richie Hawtin.
